These videos are fantastic :)

I was wondering though, do you have any recommendations for a good reliable source for at-home vitamin D test kits?

I have always used Grassroots Health and had no problems, even with shipping to the UK.

Love it! I forward all of your vids to my friends and family as an intro to paleo eating/lifestyle. It's so much easier than trying to explain it over and over again myself :)

I figured out what I'm allergic to: eggs! Fancy that, huh?

Take care and eat well.

Paleo Grrrl - eggs, huh. Could be worse I guess. That would kill me though. What are you going to do for breakfasts? I would recommend coconut cream with fruit and nuts. Fantastic. In fact I think I will go and have some now ;-)

Great video, and I like the first 2 also. I was wondering, though - doesn't eating a real food diet with more saturated fat also confer some sun-protection benefits, as far as greater burn resistance goes? I was hoping to see that in the video...

So it is YOU who did those videos Methuselah. They are great!

I was taken to Part 1 through another link, and did not know it was yours.

Adults and kids alike seem to really enjoy them, and understand the message.

Thanks!

Awesome video! I'm a big fan of your other 2 videos as well. I hope there are many more to come in this series.

+1 to Abe, plus I think having the right ratio of 3's to 6's also helps. FoodRenegade recently did a post about sun protection with diet, and I've heard other anecdotal evidence about how the right fats in one's diet can confer sun protection.

I did some sunbathing while I was in Houston at a conference a week ago and I not only felt much better (no nagging cough from all the air travel), but I'm slowing building up a bit of a tan. Love the video!

Abe, Chef Runner - thanks - yes, I was aware of that connection, and also the potential impact of vitamin D sufficiency on resistance to sunburn... it was a real struggle to stay simple so I had to chop some interesting tid bits like that!

Thanks Ned and Anon. There may be at least one more in the series, time permitting....

Is there going to be a 720p upload of this video to YouTube, as with the first two? ;-) I'd love to show it to my friends. The first two vids were absolutely perfect as a quick paleo intro and the presentation is just spot-on for helping to educate without 'preachiness'...

baz - this video is also available on youtube - just click on the video to be taken there. I am not sure what you mean by 720p - as far as I know, this one is uploaded to youtube in the same way as the other two....

Methuselah,

I went to YouTube before posting my previous comment and this 'Part 3' video is available there in two resolutions... 360p and 480p, but not the first of the "HD" video standards, a.k.a. 720p (1280x720 resolution). The copies of your first two videos which I downloaded were available on YouTube in 720p (1280x720) and this makes the text and graphics you used look much clearer and more suitable for presentation in front of a group. It looks like the copy of this video that was uploaded wasn't the same resolution as the first too... I dunno. Either way, thanks again for producing such compelling and well-edited content! We need more videos like this to spread the word! :-)

Hi Baz - are you seeing this in the part that appears under teh video when you click 'embed'? I notice the HD option is not there on nutshell 3, but I am thinking that's because it's a default setting now. It seems to allow embedding up to 1280 x 745, but maybe this is just the size rather than the standard. I certainly made and uploaded the video using the same approach, and in fact the quality should be better because I had a better system this time for the recording part. Have you actually tried playing it in the same way as you have the others? I would be interested to know how the quality compares.

Great info and DELIVERY. I have a question for you folks. I started becoming allergic, I suppose, to the sun at age 25. At first I would only develop a rash on my elbows and wrists, but as I age, the rash is spreading. Alas. What about sunscreen on my arms (and face since I'm prone to Sean Connerasma) but exposing the more sun tolerant areas of my bod.

Thanks Lightning and Aaron.

labortrials - I am afraid your question is well outside my field of knowledge... but I would suggest seeing whether you can get in touch with the folks at Grassroots Heath. They have a newsletter from Dr Cannell who's quite an authority on this stuff and you may be able to correspond with him. Hope this helps. Other readers may have their own advice to offer, of course...

This was a very informative video! It answers a lot of questions for me.

Good work M! Maybe we need paleo Oscars? The Groksters?

;)

Methuselah said...

Thanks Asclepius. Hope you are back in the swing of things after the holiday. I am abroad myself at the moment and fell victim to one or two slices of bread last night!

Awesome video! I'm going to share it.

The RIGHT vitamin D testing is crucial, by the way. Many doctors do the wrong test. According to the Vitamin D Council, the 25(OH)D test is the most reliable. It tests for the pre-hormone levels in the blood, which ideally should be in the 50-80ng/ml range.

You can do the test at home, by the way. It is a fingerstick test you can order online in most states. More info here

By the way, if you are having digestive issues, or your liver is overloaded, you may not be absorbing Vitamin D from food/supplements. A big finger points to this if you've been taking higher doses but your levels still come out a bit low. Get your gut & liver function tested and resolved. In the meantime, you might be better off with sub-lingual vitamin D3, which bypasses the digestive system by getting absorbed thru the mucosa in your mouth.

Thanks Sandy - that's really useful extra information.
