In a nutshell it means that one is NOT really attracted to "bad" food, overeating, cigarettes, booze, drugs or a myriad of other things but the GUILT they induce. If one can indulge truly WITHOUT the guilt then the inclination to indulge simply goes away because there is no guilt attached to it anymore.

It will probably take quite a while working with this distinction to start to get it. Years ago I quit smoking using this and I am seldom tempted to eat or drink outside the confines of Paleo simply because I have worked on the guilt, which is the real problem.

This may sound crazy to someone not familiar with this concept but trust me, it can work. It just takes awareness - that's all.

What tipped me off, other than your reference to "guilt" and "punishment" was your use of exercise used to mitigate your orgy of food. It wasn't really the overeating that you were trying to fix with exercise but the guilt, which clearly didn't work.

Excuse me for all this babble. Hope it helps.KAYUMOCHIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14682442083176653548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6715049094354778809.post-10329778578192407352010-05-21T03:50:36.367+01:002010-05-21T03:50:36.367+01:00Hi M!

I'm yet to stray from paleo foods in my binges, but I have had some really uncomfortable nights after wildly overindulging in nuts/nut butter/dried fruit.

The thought of me cutting loose on actual junk makes me shudder - I am literally insatiable when I decide to eat something "bad". So far I've only allowed myself dried fruit and paleo baked treats...it will be interesting to see how long my resolve holds! I know that if I allow myself to eat a little bit of cake...or some pastries...or fried chicken...it will get BAD! Your binge would look infinitesimal in comparison hahaha.

Take care and keep it coming!
Looking forward to your next post :)Paleo Grrrlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07147880798102103571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6715049094354778809.post-53871655422259269452010-05-20T23:13:04.744+01:002010-05-20T23:13:04.744+01:00What a spectacular binge! It goes to show how important environmental cues are in controlling and undermining our eating behavior (hey if everybody else is doing it, I can too!) The other bad part is that everyone can see what good shape you're in, and yet you eat that way too, so "it must be genetic."

As for the swelling, see for example this post http://nephropal.blogspot.com/2009/12/hypertension-and-metabolic-syndrome.html Doug McDuff's comment was interesting too- lower serum K by giving glucose and insulin (it gets taken up into the cells along with water), so swelling all around.

Good luck with next time. It sounds difficult.

CynthiaDrs. The feet thing really got me thinking -- 2 weeks ago when I was eating crap and thinking about trying primal for a week, just to help me get off the sugar, I whacked my little toe. I wore actual shoes in an effort to protect the little guy, and ended up with my feet swelling. I even noticed that my feel swelled during the day (read: while I ate all the crap I find at work) after my toe healed. Today, however, my feet are their normal bony selves. Very interesting...Jennhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18272195874952025836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6715049094354778809.post-6220708769896911482010-05-20T20:56:40.127+01:002010-05-20T20:56:40.127+01:00Dang...this is so true.
